Jarvis Cocker, Spin Magazine, 1997.
Photo: Phil Poynter.
This issue of Spin was basically the greatest issue of anything in the history of music magazines. It was the Spin 40 issue, in which they ranked the 40 biggest bands around or whatever, which they did a lot back then, but this was I think the only time where every single band got a full-page photo. Which was really fascinating and also convenient for locker-and-three-ring-binder-decorating purposes. (Stereolab! The Chemical Brothers! Ani DiFranco, whose photo was back-to-back with one of those Candies ads with Jenny McCarthy on a toilet!)
This photo particularly was great, I thought, and I tried to do the tone-on-tone shirt and tie combo well into the 00’s, even though it was pointed out to me more than once that the only person who did that in real life was Regis Philbin on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
