Marianne Faithfull - Is This What I Get for Loving You? (1967)
Written by Phil Spector, Carole King and Gerry Goffin, this song was originally released by The Ronettes in 1965. I think Marianne’s version is sadder; the arrangement during the chorus overpowers her voice, as if she no longer has the energy to sing above the instruments. The song’s sixties maximalist production and New Orleans-style horns in the break are interesting sonic touches. And I love the way Marianne sings the following lines, over a great chord progression:
Don’t you know how lonely I’m gonna be?
Don’t leave me, baby.
Don’t tell me it’s over.
So good. So, so good.
