Sam Phillips, “Holding On To The Earth”

Amy Grant’s Heart In Motion is by default my favorite Pop Crossover Album By A Christian Lady because it was my very first CD. (Also: “Baby Baby” is awesome, still, and always will be.)

But Sam Phillips’ The Indescribable Wow (technically her second post-Jesus, post-name change album) is one of my very favorite records, too*, partly because of songs like this, which have weird Mitchell Froom-y keyboard flourishes (it also kind of sounds like the Able Tasmans a little, another plus!) and partly because of songs like “What You Don’t Want To Hear,” with its chirpy sped-up chorus.

[*I own it on vinyl and didn’t get it until this millennium, I’m pretty sure, so it’s not even remotely like Heart In Motion in my head, even though they’re both poppy albums by Christian ladies and only came out two years apart.]
