Today, for the first time EVER, I got an email that someone “mentioned me on Facebook.”
I signed up for Facebook in 2006, I think, when you still needed a college e-mail address to be there. I went to a commuter state school, so getting an on-campus address seemed like more bureaucracy than it was worth. (See also: renewing my ID after the first year.) But I worked at Brown and used that e-mail address and never changed it, even though I stopped working at Brown nearly four years ago now.
Periodically my login menu would tell me that I needed to update my e-mail address, but I never did; if they want to delete my account, I thought, it might actually be something of a service. But they caught up to me—I knew they could, after all, since I have 40 Firefox tabs open at any given moment and sometimes leave blog comments and whatever the hell—and now I got a notification because someone tagged me in a post.
I know this is minor and I should expect this and it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things I should care about on the internet, but I think this might be the time to start investigating exit strategies?
Also Facebook events are even more the bane of my existence than they used to be.
